After Soelden World Cup Opening in Giant Slalom, the White Circus stopped in Levi, Finland, this weekend for a men and a women night slalom.
In Saturday's ladies' slalom opening defending FIS World Cup overall champion Lindsay Vonn (USA) delivered an amazing performance to claim her career's maiden slalom victory. She posted the fastest runs in both rounds despite a major mistake in the middle of the second run. Behind Vonn, Maria Pietilä-Holmner (SWE) captured her career's first World Cup podium in her father's native country while Maria Riesch (GER) took third.
Salomon New comer and slalom specialist Veronika Zuzulova achieved an impressive performance taking a great 5th after a very severe fall during the morning training sessions. Courageous despite painful head and hip, Veronika took 9th in the first run before coming back to 5th place thanks to the second run 4th best time. Congratulations to Veronika for this first and great race on her Salomon skis! Salomon young French talent Nastasia Noens also achieved an encouraging 24th in the first run, starting with bib number 42, before she went out in the second run.
In the men's race on Sunday, France's Jean Baptiste Grange secured a clear victory after having posted a significant lead after a great first run. As a surprise to many, Bode Miller finished second, his first World Cup slalom podium since 2004 and Mario Matt of Austria took third. Salomon racers Giorgio Rocca and Akira Sasaki, both qualified, went unfortunately out in the second run but show how fast they can be this winter!
The World Cup athletes will now fly to the USA for some training sessions before Beaver Creek (men) and Aspen (women) races in two weeks.
